I love NYC. In 2008 Tristan and I and our 3 kids all visited the great city for the first time. It’s funny to look back at these photos and see how young they were! They were only 4, 2, and 14 months, and it seems hilarious that we were brave enough to traipse all over Manhatten with our double stroller and diaper bag in tow.
I was thinking about New York last night when I found out that Nora Ephron died. NYC has always been a place I would dream about going too, but only in the “tourist” sense. It wasn’t until I found a deep love for the movie “You’ve Got Mail” (written by Ms. Ephron) that I began to look at NYC in a new light. I think that is has to be one of my all-time most watched films. It would take me way too long to explain why, but it’s just one of those movies that I never get tired of.
On my old copy of “You’ve Got Mail”, I had watched the commentary done by Nora and her sister. They went into great detail about the Upper West Side and all of the businesses and locations that were featured in the movie. Nora described the Upper West Side as a “small town feel” where you see the same people over and over again. I was so intrigued by her unique view of the city, and when we were finally able to visit in 2008, we of course stayed on the Upper West Side, and I visited as many of the film locations as possible.
All of this to say, not only did I greatly respect and admire Nora Ephron for her writing, sense of humor, and viewpoint on life, but she really shaped my view on one of my favorite places in the world. I will truly miss her and her beautiful, witty stories.

Oh my goodness, the kiddos were so little! I am SO sad about Nora Ephron – she seriously was the BEST. And of course you know I feel exactly the same way about “You’ve Got Mail” – I’ve definitely seen that more than any other movie in my life:)

Great post, Steph! I sure do still love the Nora book you gave me, and love how her actual life experiences ended up in those movies! Real lines from her conversations are words we all love today.
I remember thinking you guys were so brave when you took that trip. Wow-those babies have grown!
